For anyone who may find this thread in the future, here is how I oriented the clips. They don’t seem SUPER secure, but I don’t know that they need to be.
Here are a couple shots of my spare 1977 Speedo.
It is complete so shots were hard to get of the clips.
The Odometer side clip is very tight and secure the trip side clip can rotate but secure...
After looking at your head a little closer, you may want to check that the small spring you have placed around the trip shaft is in the correct location.

There is a spring that retracts the brass gear that drives the resets trip numbers to "0000".

thanks! Yes, I have the spring that aids in the trip reset, but now that you say that, perhaps the spring I have on the other side of the trip is meant for the odometer? Either way, I ordered a kit of springs from Amazon and am going to put one to help hold the odometer wheel in place in addition to the clip.
