I have a '78 that when I turn the key and try to start - there is no sound. Battery has 14.2 cranking amps, I replaced the starter and it started several times and now nothing. I can jump it from the solenoid and it starts fine. Does not seem to be heat soak or the neutral switch. Thoughts ?
Does your starter have a front support bracket? Most years did and several of those brackets were never put back on after the starter was worked on.
The bracket went from the starter casing to the block. It not only serves to take some weight off the starter bolts, but is also an excellent GRD.
And of course, you must put the rear tires on ramps, remove the Battery NEG GRD cable at the frame. Wire brush everything, reinstall.
The great (not) invention of the side post terminals on batteries could easily hide poor contact, corrosion, etc.
Using a voltmeter and a helper, connect the meter to the S terminal of the solenoid and have the helper turn the key. No power is bad switch or break in wire from switch.
Starter harness has a connector on the firewall just passengers side of the distributor on my 77. Plastic connector for the starter solenoid wire. Mine gave up a few years ago. No start. Repaired that connection. No issues ever since.
