If you are talking about the very center section, nope, they are not rare, it is called Purple or Blue dot tail light mod done by us old people.
Take a close up pic of the back side center section, does it look like its been glued in? The previous owner was probably an older guy, what other mods were done to the car?
One used to able to buy tail lights for older cars ( my 49 Murc ) that already had the center sections with the Purple/Blue dot mod already done.
The white section was just removed and replaced with what ever coloer they wanted.
Cool Mod

Yes, my state requires motor-vehicle inspection every 2-years. 4 years ago I ran it through and the guy told me they were illegal, but he let me "slide" but to remove it. 2 years later I said "F___k" it and ran it through anyway and the guy never even mentioned it. Inspection- passed!

they are along the lines of lake pipes, fuzzy dice, curb feelers, fender skirts, spoke wheels, chopped roofs, flat head or W engines with as many carbs as would fit.....etc...part of the dynamic back in the day. Still have a place with some of us older guys
Much easier to install in the later cars with plastic lenses, just had to make sure you twisted the tabs slightly so you couldn’t see them through the lense. Installing on older glass lenses was the real challenge.
