I have a dumb question but I have noticed some of the big blocks used an orange valve cover and some had chrome. Was that just an order preference or does it indicate a performance different in the engines? Or maybe a trim package detail?
65-67 used painted covers expect the L89. For 68-69 they were chrome. I think by 70-74 they were orange again.
1970 454's came with chrome valve covers, and I think early 71's through around VIN 3000 could have come through with either painted or chrome covers. The 70-71 covers were slightly different than the 68-69 covers.

to be honest I can't remember the last time I saw a real 70 BB Corvette.
I always liked the orange for some reason, just something primal about that fat cover in an understated paint. These cars are as much about attitude as they are anything.:-)
Harley riders used to say "Chrome don't get ya home" and they were right, but it sure is eye-catching. Seems to have disappeared from new cars and replaced with plastic, electric motors and touch screens. 🤮
Finding a good set of BB Chrome valve covers is getting harder and much more expensive. The factory reproductions have the same issue with "low quality" Chrome plating and can corrode very quickly. I am tired of having to polish and wax the reproduction valve covers as they rust anyway. I have to polish them every spring and hope they last another season.
factory covers where flashed chromed. for my 66 Chevelle with its original flashed chromed covers I just wax them every year when I wax the car. seems to work just fine

Just curious, do you recall what that difference is?

from 66-74 there is over 300 different part numbers for all the BB valve cover applications. Each year there slight difference between where the clips where, indentation sizes and locations etc.

Like so many of the Corvette big block covers, I think the difference was something about the shape of the lower, rear corner of the left (driver's) side cover.
I have a set of aftermarket chrome covers on mine. They are beginning to look a little sketchy. I would prefer to replace them with OEM's but since I have roller rockers I am afraid some covers may not fit. They are Comp Cam Pro Magnum and pretty low profile but I am not sure if there would be issues with some of the covers. With 300 potential differences as Nowhere Man noted
above there are likely some that may have a clearance issue.
