Disassembling/prepping my corvette for paint I found that one of the previous owners changed the mirrors to the bullet style. They only attached one nut because the other one was not accessible. Once removed and sanded there is significant damage beneath.
Hi 76VT, Interestingly I have been stripping my 76 for paint and the previous owners had installed a few different types of mirrors to the doors resulting in several unused screw holes in the outer door panel. I wanted to go back to stock chrome mirrors. About that time a former forum member DUB made a post about what is on the other side of the door panel and how to fix/replace the threaded steel plate that is used to secure the mirror. I cannot tell from your picture if that plate is still in your door or not - I guess no reason to think it isn't. The repair of the fiberglass doesn't look too bad on your door. Unfortunately the access to the back side where the plate is located is a very narrow channel making back support for your fiberglass repair very tricky if you want to go that route. If it were me I would use a Dremel with a small die grinding tip and remove any loose fiberglass, use epoxy resin and colloidal silica mix to a thick paste to fill gaps, then sand down and finish with filler ( I use Evercoat SMC panel adhesive). Here is the link to the DUB repair, he was a great source of information on the forum but sadly I think he passed away last year. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...placement.html
