I am trying to tear a standard column completely down so that I can have outer jacket powder coated. I have it all apart, except the center tube which has the lock out lever attached, seems to be held in by the lever at the bottom and a collar above. (the one the lock collar attaches to. It seems like I should drive the tube with the lever down and out of the cast hub, but it is not moving and I don't want to break it. What am I missing? Thanks, Tim
Wow! No offense, but that seems like overkill for a steering column. I just painted mine in the car with the same spray vinyl dye I used for the interior plastic parts. Never saw a scratch or chip on it in 10+ years. Powder coating should last forever! ..well beyond the life of the car.
I suggest that you look (SEARCH) for Jim Shea's papers on column disassembly/re-assembly. Jim worked for Saginaw Steering for years and knows these things (and other steering items) well. He drafted several papers that will guide you "thru the maze".

Thanks, Have sent off a request. I acquired a partially finished restomod and all the metal exc chrome has been powder coated. ( You might be surprised how inexpensive it is. For a 65 coupe I got a quote for all the metal including the frame, blasted and coated for $500. They like big jobs, small ones are proportionally much more.) Cheers, /tim
The "trouble" would bother me more than the expense. But, that's what's great about this 'hobby'...everyone gets to do their own thing when it comes to working on these relics.
