Good move on the valve covers, gaskets and cleaning/sealing the intake bolts. Sometimes the old leaked oil takes a bit to cook off. If everything you’ve done is tight & right that smell and smoke should soon go away. I’d just keep an open eye and re tighten stuff as needed, which you already mentioned. Valve Covers are not directional, in the sense that YOU control which grommet is needed in which cover.
The two different size grommets could easily be swapped to the other cover.
Those wing hold-down handles sometimes will fight you coming off. But better than too loose.
Maybe when all eight wings are cocked-eyed and have no direction, is when people say they are tacky. I agree. Lazy installer.
If all 8 wings are aligned and parallel, they look nostalgic and sharp.
