Default C3 Speedometer Easter egg and Hack?

Well, the speedo needle fell off on my '72, and it looks like it won't go back on. I had it out years ago trying to repair the trip meter, but to no avail. Anyway, did you know that the odometer has a tenths wheel, but it's hidden from view. It's black like the other numbers, so I'm guessing that the factory went to the GM parts bin for the unit. Now would you stop someone from replacing that black tenths wheel with a white one, and enlarging the slot so then tenths show through. It makes even more sense if you have a DOA trip meter. I have a replacement speedo coming, so I might look into this. Stupid hack, waste of time, or something cool in a weird way?

why hack up something that the factory engineered that way for some reason (probably symmetry) and cause more work than you really need to. Obviously the choice is yours as far as what look you want to have or "create". I'm kind of from the school of if it ain't broke, it probably doesn't need fixing. Obviously just one man's opinion.

I'd do it. I have no use for a trip, but it be cool to utilize what's already built into the speedo. It's something that nobody would notice unless you pointed it out, which I think it pretty cool.

I say do it.

Speedometers are not that complicated to repair. My odometer stopped working a few years ago. I repaired it using a part from a chevy pickup speedo.
Have you identified what component that is preventing the trip meter from working.?

If your car is a resto-m0d....have fun with the 00000,0
If it's a Survivor, don't wittle on stuff...just repair what's broken.

I had to use a drill (bit) .002 larger to ream the hole in the needle so I wouldn't bend/break the shaft reinstalling the needle. I the needle ends up being loose on the shaft, put a drop of super glue in the needle hole...then slide it onto the shaft in the correct location at 0 mph

It's coming apart this week, so I will see. Good thing is the used speedo I bought works fine, including the tripmeter.
