Previous owner replaced the gas tank (sadly no mention of build sheet), but left it as you see below... With the opening off-center towards the rear.
Looks pretty snug, like it's pushed as far forward as it will go, but from underneath maybe there is a lip it got stuck on and isn't angled up/forward enough to get where it needs to be?
Also noticed fluid on the inner part of the rear passenger tire. I assume I need to order brake lines next...
Does not look like a factory fit tank. You can try to loosen up the two mounting bolts and shift the tank forward. It may help to get longer bolts for more adjustment. Once set, replace the longer bolts with the factory bolts. If there is clearly no room, replace the tank with a Quanta. They are factory in every way. Regarding the brake fluid on the wheel, it's most likely a lip seal problem. Pull them apart to determine if the calipers have been sleeved in stainless steel. If so, consider rebuilding with O-ring pistons on all four wheels. Also, if the four rubber lines are over 10 years old or suspect, replace them as well. Do a search on the topic, there is a wealth of information available here on the C-2 and C-3 forums. Good luck. Jerry
The third picture showing the bottom of the tank doesn't look correct. I think I see a tank strap but it should be on top.
Think you should drop the spare tire and post better pictures of the bottom.
The Quanta tank looks like an OEM tank and is not that expensive. I replaced the tanks on both my C3s. The 68 went pretty much straight forward. The 70 was difficult in that the repro straps seemed a tad too short. For the 68, I lifted the body up about 10 inches or so at the rear and about 2 inches up in the front. This made getting the tank in much easier. For the 70, the difficult one...the body was completely off the car.
I'd guess your brake calipers are the source of the leak. BTW: The brake lines going from front to rear, on the driver's side, can be replaced without elevating the body. The secret to removing these brakes lines is to remove the old front to back lines in ONE piece...don't cut them up to remove. To install the new, just do what you did to remove the old in one piece, except do it in reverse.
I’d guess you might lose 1/2 gallon capacity if you do nothing. You can probably take a piece of wood and push most of the dent out from the filler neck.
Thanks for those pictures, Alan. I think it is an angle/positioning issue. It looks like it needs to rotate forward, which would probably get the nozzle lined up. I'm not seeing bolts... just two metal bands/straps curving over and around the tank.
While creeping underneath I also noticed fresh coolant around the lower hose, and it looks like the metal/pipe portion is dented where the hose attaches... Did I find more BFH tracks?! Did I find an excuse to upgrade the radiator?

Your tank neck has to move forward but if you look at Alan's photo compared to yours his does not extend past the forward removal cross member. Yours is already extended past the cross member.
I'll measure and let you know! There is a lip running around the tank that I think is supposed to be above the cross member, and is probably what is preventing rotating/tilting the tank into the right position.
If it does not impact drivability I may save the quanta tank exchange for another day. I can still fill the tank with the misaligned gas cap, and there is plenty more to do just to get it on the road. I was given a bunch of receipts, I'll dig through them and see if I can find something about the tank.
