1975: I installed a new HD diff cover and have rebuilt factory trailing arms. Original steel springs that came off the car went back on. When I raised the leaf spring up, it was too far toward the back of the car. I could not get the bolt through with all the rubber and mounting kit in place. I had tried everything. Someone on a forum post had a similar problem and recommended using a rope (I used a ratchet strap) and this allowed me to get them mounted. I couldn't visually see the spring move when I tightened the strap, but it did allow for everything to go into place. Hopefully this might come up in a search and help someone else.
Hello,
What you discovered is pretty typical.
The spring's end only travels straight up and down relative to the trailing arm.
While the end of the trailing arm travels in an arc.
Often the trailing arm needs to be pivoted up or down a bit in order to make the connection with the bolt and cushions.
You moved the spring which is just as good.
Regards.....
