Default Engine Hoist, Harbor Freight?

Hey all, I'm going to buy an engine hoist soon as I have a few things I want to change before I screw everything back together. So has anyone bought one of these from Harbor Freight and are you happy with it? Is there someplace else I should consider? I assume the 1 ton will be enough for my sbc? TIA

YES- I bought that two ton unit. Very happy with it. very durable.

Go for it. I think I paid $170 for it a couple years ago....

I have one but haven't got to use it. With these engine jack, are they long enough to pull the engine from the front? Most cars would not be a problem but the C3 has the engine sitting back further from the front bumper

Got mine from HF. Good unit. I went with the regular model vs the foldable. The regular one has a longer boom arm to get in to the motor since the nose of a vet comes out so stinkin far. You need enough distance at the 1 ton set point of the boom to get to the center of the motor when you pull it.

Got one and love it. I even used it to lift the body off the car. I purchased mine about 5 years ago and use it constantly.

unless you are going to use one all the time, why not rent one? I had this option, but a friend let me borrow one for free. i didn't plan on pulling engine/trannys very often so i didn't buy one. definitely get the longest boom you can find.

Gary, when I borrowed one last spring I didn't think I'd be pulling the motor again already so borrowing was fine. I realize this is one of those tools I won't use often, but I hate asking to borrow things and I like having things available if I need it. With my luck, borrowed things sometimes break and I end up buying one anyhow but for someone else .

It looks like Harbor Freight may soon get my purchase since they have a store nearby.

Steves 77, that's a great point. I will certainly check into the lengths between the foldable and non so I can get the longer of the 2.

Thanks everyone

PS. Is this a general or a technical section question

Default Engine Hoist / Engine Stand Combo

Checker has an 2-ton folding engine crane / engine stand combo, for $149.00. Made by Champion. I haven't had a chance to see it in person yet...

Can't speak for your area but here in NJ the local Pep Boys has had one advertised for months in their weekly sunday flyer for $109 plus a $10 rebate. It can't be the best for that price, but certainly worth checking out if your intent is to only use it a couple times.

I rented one a couple years back and paid 2/3 of this price for a rental. If I needed one again, I'd certainly check out the $100 special first.

FWIW. Good Luck!

If Harbor Frieght's engine lift is anything like their scissor lift, it should be a good item. I like my scissor lift so far.

I have seen the Harbor freight ones and would go with the 2 ton and the have a sale where they throw in the engine titler with the 2 ton so it actually costs about the same as the 1 ton plus the tilter. I have a non foldable 2 ton unit unk brand I bought used for $50. works great. When I got it I though, gee I can always borrow one, but since I have it I have used it many times and not always to pull an engine. Did you ever try to pick up a chevy eng and trans that you son knocked off the dolly?

I got one at harbor frieght also. I did not get the 'collapsable' model because it still takes up a lot of floor space. The 'non-collapsable' model comes apart with 3 bolts and stores tightly against a wall.

The pumps are known to blow seals with little use - but I skipped the extended warranty. If the pump blows, I would rather go pay for a better pump than replace it with the same piece of junk.
