Default Stage 8 Locking Fasteners

I am getting ready to order something to help with header maintenance. The thread about shorty headers reminded me. After a days worth of cruising I have to come in and hit the bolts or I will have that pfft, pfft leak sound the next time out. I was thinking about the Stage 8 fasteners. Anyone using these and what length are you using. 1 inch should do it but I want to be sure. Any other suggestions on what brand or anything else to use is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Not sure about the length, but I've heard good things about them.

I measured the depth of hole with a vernier, knocked a bit off of it (1/4"?) & then got some stainless set screws with allen heads (socket head?). Wound these in tight with a spring washer under each one & have never had to touch them since.

Great idea Paul. Probably a lot cheaper too.

Default Socket head capscrews!

UK Paul,

You're right the use of socket head capscrews greatly eases the installation. Just make sure to use a lock washer and you should have a good few years of maint free enjoyment!

Thanks,
Good choice. I use um and like um, positive set up with the locks. Allen cap screws are for racers that can easily get to them.

I've got them. Kind of a pain to install, but you only do it once. They look cool, too. I'm satisfied.

I ordered them from Summit. I just plugged in the application and they spit out the proper P/N. If that won't work, you should make sure thet twice the thread OD is engaging the head. 1 1/4" would be more than sufficient if the header flange+gasket is about 1/4".

If you get the stage 8s and install new header gaskets don't install the locks right away. it will take a few weeks for everything to settle in so you'll be retorqing the bolts. Once everything settles down you can install the locks and you probably won't have to touch them again. i used Percy's dead soft aluminum header gaskets with the stage 8s and I haven't touched either in over 2 years.

I've got newer header gaskets because burnt one out. The new ones should never burn out again. It just gets a little old retightening after a good cruise. Summit wants $70 for them in SS. That is kind of hard to swallow for a set of bolts. That makes them almost $6 apeice. WOW!!

We use the Stage 8 bolts on every header install that we do. They are a PITA to start with but are great once they are installed. Saves you a lot of work down the road. The 8911s are the ones we generally use unless your headers flanges are extremely think. We have them in stock for $34.99.

Eddie: I have them as well, but do not remember the length. It is possble to put them on incorrectly. Guess how I know?

It has been a couple of years ago, but seems as if I installed a couple of them backwards or something like that. When they loosen up I realized my mistake.

Got my Stage 8 bolts in the mail today. Wondering, what are you torqueing header bolts too. 30 Ft lbs seems like an awful lot. I just don't want to warp the flanges. Thanks guys.

Eddie
I think 30 ft lbs is too much. Seems like 15 ft lbs sticks in my head for some reason.

I did some searching on the subject and there were some 30 FT LBS thrown out and I think that is just a bit too much. 15 sounds good to me Tony.

Anyone else got any more ideas before I torque them to 15?

I had them on my Dynomax headers and they worked good.

For the Hooker sidepipes I went with bolts that had a smaller head plus the allen wrench feature that I got at Schucks. I have had no loosening problems which may be attrituable to the really nice thick flanges on the Hookers.

Two weeks ago I installed Steve's old Dynomax headers and the Stage 8 Locking Fasteners he included on my 78. Installation was easy with these fastener and they also look
