I just bought a 1973 StingRay and I purchased a Pyle in Dash flip-up DVD player with nav. I haven't attempted to install it yet but I use to be a professional installer at a local high-end stereo shop here in Phoenix so I know what I'm doing. I might have to fabricate (build-up the dash) something but I assure you it will look like it was born there, guaranteed. I noticed eBay has a dash piece with the din opening molded into the bezel (NOT a cut bezel with a trim plate) however its $250 and I'm not sure if the guage section is going to interfere with the flip-up panel. Either way I will make it work. I will post some pictures when I'm done.

Use a simple TomTom One with suction cup as in image - can't stand crap on the dash top - more really for accurate GPS speed indication - usually know when I'm going - however still very useful as a back-up in case you get diverted off your planned journey.

Ive got a smart phone, if the technology changes I'm not tied into some permanently installed old school technology

I just sold my C6 Z06 and have never relied on the clumbersome factory NAV system in that car, the phone is far easier to use and takes voice commands.

Here's mine. I don't have the nav but it's an add-on if I lose my Rand-McNally.

I got a small Garvin Nuvi for $99 at Best Buy. I got a weighted base for it and cut the front off of it so it fits on the "74 dash in the center. It plugs imto the cigarette lighter. The unit tuches the dash and the windshield so it is a tight fit.

Problem: hard acceleration will move it as I don't have any adhesive under it. I can set it on the floor if I don't need it. Advantage: It has a dial type speedometer function showing your speed without taking your eyes off the idiots trying to play bumper car.

Go ahead and laugh. I consider the on dash speedo to be worth the money,

Ray

You can retract the display while driving so you can see the gauges. Nav is usually for in city navigation and if you know your car well as in it's not prone to overheating or low oil pressure, then when the display is up shouldn't be an issue.

Preferred the single din option as well, kenwood with nav which is Garmin, no issues with interference at the rear or when the screen flips up.

Here is mine completed and in the car. I bought an old iphone with no service plan and I just link it to my iphone so I can get internet and not have to take my phone in and out of the dock every time I leave the car. Google maps app takes care of the navigation perfectly. I can listen to my internet radio and the nav app will mute my music and give the directions through the speakers. I also changed from the iSimple IS76 to the HRT iStreamer DAC. Much higher sound quality.

Another alternative - good, bad or otherwise - you decide:

Garmin 276C Chartplotter with 'Road Package.' Approx $300 on ePay.
Fits snugly between C3 dash and windshield, power cord plugs into ciggie lighter and mini-speaker lays neatly in ashtray. At eye level, no unsafe need to glance southward.

Benefits:

-removable; requires no modification (you've got enough to do on your cars, right?)

-multiple displays; sometimes ya don't need the stupid map and just wanna check your true speed (my speedo's 10mph too fast)

-Mapping Software: during long snowy winters, you plan your spring routes 'offline,' then load 'em up when the sun comes back

-MOB button (man over board); handy when the wife falls out of the car on a road trip; mark position, go back and retrieve.

-Marine capable; if you've got a hole in the water, makes great primary or backup chartplotter; WAAS-enabled, which means likely more accurate than a Tom-Tom

Looks like this:
