hi im new to the forum but i own a 77, im having a problem with the dash panel/instrument clusters, everytime i shift from one gear to another more common in the 1st to 2nd shift, i seem to blow a fuse? and i lose my instrument panel lighting, ive looked around and everything seems to be ok..
NOTE...the switch controlling my reverse lights has a short so ive got that unplugged if that is of any concern..
i hear this a common problem but ive yet to hear a solution from anyone ive dealt with personally...
My 77 had the same broblem. Turned out to be the cig lighter. I unplugged the hot wire to the lighter and taped it. Didn't have the problem again. When I got around to checking it, the ground to the lighter was shorting.
I would start by lifting the console and checking the wires beneath it. It sounds like you are pinching a wire with the shifter. The wire probably has been rubbed long enough to wear through the insulation, and when the shifter hits it - goodbye fuse.
My son's Camry had a similar problem only with the e-brake. Whenever he would set the brake the dash lights fuse would blow. A wire was caught in the e-brake mechanism and the insulation abraded over time.
thanks for the quick replys both of you, when i work on it this weekend ill look at both areas and see what i come up with, thanks for the help and ill update you when i find something out
