I was disconnecting everything to take the body of my '72 Vette last night. When I went to disconnect the automatic tranny linkage I noticed two cables running off it. One went to the console shifter and the other ran to what appears to be a column shifter. Completely baffled I checked the steering column to make sure there weren't any levers there I didin't notice. There wasn't, but there is a ring where a column shifter would go. I twisted it with my hands and the tranny shifted gears!! Is that a normal? It's a tilt/tele column that looks like it belongs in a Vette. I'm just baffled as to why it's hooked up in addition to the console shifter.
Could it be part of the reverse lock-out (or neutral safety) system?
I don't think so. Seems a bit odd that the ring around the column would turn everytime you shift, but that seems to be the case. I know my '82 didn't have anything like that.
think it's a safety thang. works with column lock, wont lock wheel unless in park and wont let you start car in gear. allso locks shifter in park with key off. somthing like that anyway...
it allows the steering column to lock in park and only in park.
WARNING
i didn't bother to replace my cable when it failed and just tied the adjustment in the park position. You have to be extremely carefull not to turn the ignition to the off position when moving down the road as the steering column will lock and you will crash.

manuals have this locking device for steering wheel also. It is somehow hooked to the reverse shifter location. Mine was snipped before I got the Vette....
