Getting stared on a front suspension job. My shop manual hasn't arrived yet and a buddy of mine dropped off a couple forks and a spring compression tool saying that I'd them. In the absence of a manual, I've read some other posts that claim to need no special tools to do the job. If not, how do I get the springs out?? The car is a 79 and needed a new radiator, so that's currently out of the way as well as the alternator and Psteering unit. I have the shocks out and the rotors and hubs off.
Use thie spring compressor to load the spring (Compress). It has to be the kind that goes inside the spring, where the shock was. Loosen but dont remove the nuts for the ball joints. Whack the ball joints until they loosen. Remove the nuts, drop the lower A Arm out of the way.
Now be careful when unloading the spring compressor, make sure you have enough threads left to unload it fully otherwise it will come flying out of there. some wrap a chain around it. It could seriously hurt or mame you or anyone near if it gets away...
Thanks Oldschool, one side completely disassembled. I don't compress the spring anymore than I absolutely have to. On to the other side, then a nasty bit of cleaning the old parts up. Thanks for the caution.
since you have one spring out, no need for me to tell you adjust the arms so that the threaded rod should be as close to vertical as you can get it, else you'll have problems compressing the springs
