I like to keep the grime on the underside, keeps the parts from rusting,I just cleaned off the oil, undercoatiing etc that has built up on my crossmember over 25 years and hardly any rust at all was on it, took a wire brush to it and painted it and it looks brand new.
Although that is not how I want mine to look I do agree with the second part of MotorHeads quote. I'm sure all that oil and gunk and grime kept the rust away.
We are talking pure California born and raised cars here, OK born in STL but raised here in the sunshine state...except for the last year...lots a rain.....lol. But all in all out of the 4 vettes I purchased here there has been zero frame rust!
Anyway...my point is that the under carriage was spotless when he was done.
I've had mine lifted both waysoors ajar, and closed.
The only real incident was when a shop dropped my Vette off the service lift. You ought to see what happens then !! That was two years ago.I hold my breath when it is lifted now.
I'll clean the undercarrige from jacks or from a pit.
