Default T56 installation continuation

Hi

I spend a bit of time to find a solution on how to modify the removable crossmember , I am installing instead of the original welded one, in order to get this huge T56 Viper tranny up there.
Well, I had to position it about 1 " further aft, so couldn't use the old ends of the cut out welded crossmember.
And for not to have to mount the crossmember even further aft, I decided to mount the tranny right on top of it. The M21 was mounted on a bracket quit a bit forward of the crossmember.

To be able to drill the lower holes into the frame rails for the crossmember mounting, I had to position the car right above the pit, once the left side and once the right side.

After having temporary positioned the tranny and crossmember and after marking the crossmember attachment holes, I could now drill the 12 mm holes into the frame.

After this, I enlarged the holes to 2 sides in order to be able to slip a 12 mm nut inside, screwed a long bolt into the nut to hold it down against the inner side of the frame and welded it to the frame, hence closing both side cutouts. Grinding and looks like if it has always been that way.

Now I can manufacture some sections for the crossmember upper bolt attachment and weld those to the frame.

After this, I can install the flywheel, clutch and tranny and work above the tunnel to fit the shift lever. I am trying to install the original one.

This pic shows the worn out clutch link beside a new one.
I was very disapointed about not having spotted this any earlier.
It is over 1/2 worn through and was shurely on the way to give up.

Günther

Don't throw that old clutch rod out, it can be filled with weld, smoothed and reused.

Nice work. I like how the rubber mount fits in the crossmember. As for the clutch rod... that's why spherical rod ends are so much better than that pin arrangement.
