Looking for advise - Will the Hooker headers fry my stock starter. Do we need to shield it or change it out with a mini or leave it alone?
Trying to deceide before we go ahead a put the original sarter back in.
TIA
I need to answer this same question. I don't know about his car, but my headers are ceramic-coated BB Hookers with 1 in 7/8 primaries. They are going in my 70'. I was debating on whether or not to have my factory starter rebuilt or just get a powermaster mini-torque starter.
Headers usually will overheat an original starter. You can do the following to help:
- Make sure the original heat shield is still on the starter
- Add a heat shield / starter blanket
- Use a remote starter solenoid away from the headers
or
- Get a mini starter
I ran mine with Hookers headers for a couple of years. The stock starter would work OK until it got a really hot day and I would try to start it after about 10 minutes of shut down. It never failed me but would crank slow. I put in a GM mini starter and never had the problem again.
Thank you all!
Looks like I'll be getting a mini starter. Might as well replace it now while the old one is still out, rather than someday when I'm out on the road and it fries.
I put hooker competition headers (Part# 2456HKR) on my completely stock 1977 L48. I had no clearance issues with the starter or anything else for that matter.
No problems with heat soak but when I read about all the people that have had problems I do feel lucky punk .
Z-man's advice is worth taking to make the starting system bulletproof.
I'd replace the starter now. I'm getting tired of having to wait until mine cools down before the car will start when it's hot out. This is definitely one of the first mods I'm making to my car this spring!
