My spring tool arrived last night and it was just the trick. It was heftier tool than I expected and I could not have installed the spring without it or something similar. As everyone suggested, I inserted the top of the spring and used the tool to tension the spring. Then I pulled the spring back so it would line up with the hole. There was no way I could get a hammer in the hinge area and I was running short of hands. I put 3 ea 6 " 3/8 drive extensions together (just the right length to extend under the door) and held them it against the bottom of the spring. I had my son lie on a creeper and tap the extensions with a hammer, tapping the spring in the hole. It never really clicked into place, although I'm sure it bottomed out, so I'm wondering if it will work its way loose. If so, as Surfer69 suggested, I'll put a spacer under the top of the spring.
BTW. If anyone needs to borrow the tool, I'll mail it to you if you will mail it back when you are done with it.
This part of the instructions did not work for me.
"Use the leverage area of the tool and lay it against the door jamb and snap the hinge spring into place at the bottom of the hinge. Remember to keep the flat area of the hinge spring in the slot at the top of the hinge while you snap the bottom of the spring into place. It’s that simple!"
