Just tore down the differential on my 80 model. It's the aluminum case Dana 44 ICA. The tips of the side yokes are worn and appear to have worn the center pin. I can't seem to get a straight answer as to whether or not the center pin has indentations originally and how much wear is acceptable on the side yoke ends. I would appreciate any help from someone who knows these units.
I have just completed a total rear end rebuild of my 80. As my first Vette and the car only covering 47K I thought I was in for a reasonably easy ride……not so. I pulled it apart to replace a side oil seal that was leaking badly and found lots more to do. The original side yokes had mushroomed up against the centre pin which was also well beaten. Getting the yokes out is fun as the mushroomed end has to be ground down. However I have now replaced the yokes , pin and seals and have almost no vertical play in the wheels.
I suppose the more of a gap between yoke and pin the greater the impact ,the faster the wear !. The original yokes were too soft while the replacements have hardened ends, so change them and the centre pin ( $20 ) now while its in bits.
Send an email to Dan at Vansteel - I'm doing the exact same job on my 80 right now. I've looked up prices for bits at Zip, Ecklers etc, and found Vansteel to be about the cheapest - plus they do a 10% discout for CF members.
Good luck with it.
(By the way- no, there shouldn't be any indentations in the centre pin - although I understand some designs have two grooves cut into them in addition to the C-clip grooves. this should be easily distinguished from wear marks though..if its worn, its cheap to replace it!)
