Check out the 5th digit in the vin. Engine Type: 8 = L48, 4 = L82

The tachometer has a 5500 rpm redline and an L82 logo on it.

But only the VIN will tell you what REALLy was there from Saint Louis Factory. All of the other things can be swapped and replaced.

On a '79, if the 5th digit in the VIN is a 4, then you have a factory L-82 car.

If it is the original block, then the vin number should also be stamped on the extension pad at the front of the passenger side head.

If that number matches the VIN number on the drivers side window pillar, then you can tell from the VIN number location if the original motor was a L82 or L48. From there you need to determine if anything else was replaced, but you will know if was originally a L82 or L48

My 79 L48 has a L82 tach and a motor from a 75 pickup. God only knows what else!

Now how do you know if it has a two bolt main or four bolt?

The way I understand it, all L82 engines are 4-bolt. I have read on here that most L48 are 2-bolt, but at times the factory was low on 2-bolt blocks and 4-bolts were used as a substitute.
