Default Engine Installation

Before I break anything, can the engine and standard transmission be installed as a unit on my '76? Rad is out but support is still in. I am mainly concerned with the transmission crossmember (non removable).

If yes, can it go in from the side or does it have to go in from the front?

Any other tips much appreciated.

Thanks,

Yes, it can go in as an assembly. As the tranny/engine feeds in, you just have to lift the tranny tailshaft housing up over the crossmember. It works fine.

Problem with going in from the side is that you don't have much movement fore/aft to feed the assembly in.

Go in thru the front, engine and trans assembled together. Be sure your engine hoist is the cherry-picker type, with a looooong extendable support for the engine. And have a third person stand in front, watching how close the cherry picker gets to the nose of the front bumper.

I dropped them together from the side. At that point I had everything else removed so I removed the core too. I later had to remove the drivers exhaust manifold and the fuel pump.

It would be a lot easier if you had someone under near the crossmember to guide the tailshaft. I didn't and it took me forever to line everything up while answering a ton of stupid questions.

Actually it is going in from a trolley hoist on my garage I beam. I have a plate that bolts to the carb mounting with 3 holes in in for hook placement or a load leveler type bar that bolts to who knows what. The load leveler has 2 chains at the end of an adjustable bar - you've seen the type. To use that bar I would have to hook up at diagonally opposite ends of the engine, I think. Which is the better way to go? If the leveler bar is the way, I would think you would want to hook up in a straight line rather than diagonal. Where would you bolt it to the engine?

Thanks,

Just checked and found that I did not get enough chain to go from side to side on the block, front and back. That was the problem with the load leveler.

So which is recommended, load leveler or the plate bolting to the intake?

By all means the load leveler...

Jughead - did you fill the transmission before you installed it? I'm assuming that this is the way to go and that the fluid won't leak out...

Default Fill Tranny

If you fill the tranny,, be sure to plug the tail housing spline at the rear seal or put the yoke in to keep it from pouring out.

Yes, I did fill the tranny. Make sure you have the yoke push in. It has the tendency to slide out too, so watch.

How's that engine coming Jerry? Any new pics?

OK, using the load leveler, where would I bolt the chains on either side front and back of the engine? I'm paranoid about bolting into aluminum and I have aluminum heads and intake.

Thanks,

Thanks,
I used the holes in the heads. Aluminum is plenty strong. You can spread the load by using two in front and two in back. Look how Jughead set his up.

Jughead - no new pics. Just doing small stuff in the engine compartment and other boring stuff like running the fuel lines. Soon, however, better things...!!
