Default choke = idle prob?

ive recently been having a problem with uneven idle. the car will idle perfectly for about 3-5 min then suddenly kick up about 300 rpm from 600 to 900-1000 or so, and then the high idle drops about the same amount from 1600-1300 or so when its trying to warm up. i was checking my haynes maual and it said something about how the choke can cause an eneven idle. so i start pokeing around and i find out the choke wont close, it moves about 1/4 inch from full open and thats all! should it be doing this ?!i think not... how do i fix this annoyance!

So you're saying that all of the sudden all by itself the idle speed will just jump up? Check to make sure your advance weights in your distributor spring back freely.

what is your vacuum advance connected to? the dist weights should be very clean and slide freely on the plate.

when at normal idle, is the throttle stop contacting the idle screw?

With the distributor cap off turn the rotor by hand as far as it will go and then let go, it should easily spring all the way back by itself. If it struggles you need to clean up the weights, a little WD40 will be a good short term solution.
