Any advice on a aircleaner for a BB 69 vert with aftermarket L88 hood and Holley 870 street avenger. Will I still have clearance problems without a drop base for this type hood and BB setup.
The purists would say that you need the airbox and matching drop-base, gasket, and element.
Since GM went to all the trouble of engineering it, I went ahead and used it.
I think it will depend on you intake manifold choice, but you will most likely need a drop-base air cleaner to fit a 3-4" element. The factory airbox takes a 3" (actually about 3 1/2") plus allows room enough room for the foam seal compression, so you should be able to get away with a 4" element and a low/mid-rise intake with a drop-base.
Kinda speculation on my part since my only experience is with the factory L88 induction parts.
Thought I should add that I use K&N and Mobil 1 exclusively in ALL my vehicles.
Forgot to mention that the L88 hood does not have the air chamber. I just want to make sure that I have enough clearance. My setup is a 454 with a Edlebrock proformer intake and Holley 870.
This might give you an idea of how much room you've got to play with...
It's a Holley 3310 sitting on a Weiand Stealth. Factory-style short valve covers, BTW.
With this setup and the hood closed, the foam on the drop-base comresses approx. 1/2. There is a 3/16" sheet of fiberglass on top of the foam and then the 3 1/2" filter element butted up against the outside skin of the hood.
