Power Window Relay question

While redoing the interior on my 77 last month, I unplugged the wires from the relay and hooked them directly to the switches. Windows worked so I ordered a new relay. The relay is under the console near the ash tray - driver's side.

Yes, but it was both ways. Sometime they would work great then one wouldn't go up or down and then they would work again. It was frustrating. Since replacing the relay they have worked great.
