the car has a TH350
If you can get the cable out from the trans, attach the end of the cable to a drill and rev it on low speed clockwise, watch the speedo, if it doesn't move, then it is your cable, if it does, then it may be the gearing in the trans. my speedo isn't working either, I did this and it works with the drill so I will be looking to change the speedo gear in the trans...
In my 77 the cable that goes from the cruse to the spedo was broke at the cruse unit they have trouble with the gears binding and messing up in the cruse unit so I have heard

Installing a cable is very easy.
Everyone is correct so far.
If you have cruise, you can expect the problem is the transducer breaking the lower cable.
If you want to bypass the transducer, a lower cable for 86-88 SS Monte Carlo should work.
Like Ganey said, changing the cable is easy, the hardest part is disconnecting and reconnecting at the back of the speedometer. I just changed the cable and sleeve and the speedometer itself in my 77 (no cruise control). The speedometer change is DIFFICULT. Good luck.
where is the point of connection between the 2? I know the cable goes into the tranny, but where does the upper and lower meet? Under the car or behind the dash?
