I found V0499800( I think the last number is a 0. half is missing so it looks like ]) stamped on the block in front of the right head. This does not make sense to me .
Can anyone explain what this decodes too or what it means ? It does not seems to be a standard engine ID.
I have that same code V0499800 and the correct casting code 3970010 for my 72 Corvette. The engine is blue now but I find orange underneath in places... The valve covers are orange and the manifold is orange and other pieces are all orange. Did anybody ever figure out this code for the engine? Possibly part of the plate is missing and so is the code?

and no vin number on the pad next to broadcast code. these were probably engines either sold as replacements or for boats or pumps or generators or something. and there will be nothing to tell you what pistons, cam, etc besides exploratory surgery...
I'm thinking replacement engine because I also have a replacement carburetor. It is exactly the same but the code on the carburetor shows it to be the GM replacement so I was thinking that the engine was also a GM replacement. I called the phone number off the other post and spoke with the GM drivetrain technical expert and they had no idea of that number. He did say that because the engine had the 3970010 casting code that it was definitely a GM motor and not a crate as they would not have that casting code. Also looking further at mine the date code on the opposite side lists 1978.
I would conclude its a service replacement engine. Compared to bkarol's stamp pad, there is no evidence of an assigned power team function (emission-type stuff) or assembly date code. you can see the stamp is in the middle of the pad, so its assembler must not have been concerned about date codes or emission/power functionality.
Having said all that, the V0499800 typically would be interpreted that assembly was the Flint engine plant (V); 04, month of assembly or April; 99 day of the month and the 800 engine suffix code quite atypical! All of which leads us to conclude its a service replacement engine with no assigned function.
