Edelbrock performer intake and hood clearance?
I will be fitting a Edelbrock performer manifold and a Edelbrock performer 600cfm carb on my '81. Has anyone had any hood clearance problems with this combo?

I have the Edelbrock Performer high rise and Edelbrock carb on my '71. There wasn't really any clearance issues on mine. I have the Edelbrock Elite Series Air Cleaner cover and valve covers. I had to shorten the stud going through the carb and the air cleaner and tighten it down pretty hard to kind of compress the air cleaner a little but not much. You shouldn't have any problems.

I used the same carb on my 81 and all is good !!
I replaced the intake with an eddlbrock performer rpm also ---and just installed a drop base K/n filter .
You will have plenty of clearance

Even though it has been answered, my 80 has a #2101 Performer intake with a #1406 600cfm carb. I have a 4" tall filter on top of that.

I have another thread going about this, but will a Victor Jr or something even taller like a Motown single plane work as well? This is critical for me to know this before I order the engine.

I have a Performer Vortec manifold (don't remember the number) and a stock Quadrajet in my '77. The only air cleaner that will fit without touching the hood is one of those flat triangular air cleaners with the foam filter element.
I have a stinger hood with additional clearance... just haven't installed it yet because I want the hood to match the rest of the car.

How tall is that intake? It seems to me most single plane jobbers are between 4.58 and 5.58" tall, I dont know how that compares to other dual planes that are out there. I have no problem using a drop base air filter, I just dont want to sacrifice the performance of the larger single planes if I can help it.

I installed an LT1 manifold and a holley 3310 with a K & S filter assembly and had no problems. I was told to install an LT1 intake that I would need to use a big block hood, but this was not the case.

Recently put a new performer 2701 and an EB carb on my 81. Had to go with a 3" filter. DO NOT USE THE STOCK FILTER AS THE THROTTLE ASSEMBLY WILL CATCH UNDER IT! Ask me how I know......

I think I have it figured out now, a Performer RPM is overall 4.725" tall, and if that works with a drop base airfilter (and according to someone here it does) then I should be fine with a Victor Jr. because its overall height is only 4.58"! W00t, I think this will work. Unless hahaha Im totally off the ball here.

Im running the same intake and carb and the original air cleaner fit fine under the hood on my 81. I did add a heat spacer under the carb as the temps here are so high and at long lights in the city she really cooks. I also added a triangle air cleaner but had to make some mods to drop it to clear. See pictures below.

I have the same setup and I am having hood clearence issues. Be sure that the drop base air cleaner you use will clear the electric choke on the 1406 (If it 1406). I bought a holly powershot cleaner assy. and it has a 1" drop base but didn't clear the choke so I had to put in a mr.gasket 3/4" spacer between the cleaner and the carb and use a 2" filter element.

thats not a good story. I might go with 2" dropped Ram Air Box style intake, that should give me the clearence with the Victor Jr. (Which is slightly shorter than an air gap) and acces to fresh, cold air. It might look a little funky trying to route aluminum ducting to the front of the car around the lights and rad, but anything so Ive got air into the engine! Performance first.

Hi Paul,
Mine has a Performer (2101?) intake with the stock carb & filter on it. No clearance issues. VettePaul had a Performer RPM & needed to use a drop base cleaner with it. I think the air gap may be even taller?
I'll probably start a fight here, but if you fit a drop base cleaner then you may have to lose the cold air intake so that it'll just be sucking hot engine bay air in (no doubt about it, an engine runs better with cold air being fed into it than with warm air). Additionally, with a drop base cleaner (and maybe lower filter), you're decreasing the height of the column of air above the carb mouth. I would have though that this would decrease performance as it causes turbulence in the air entering the carb, when you really want a smooth flowing stream of air. Whether the intake gains more power than I suspect is lost by the dropped cleaner I don't know, but I think I'm about to find out
