I bought an 82 last fall. when you open the hood there is a solonoid looking thing that looks as if it would open a door to let air in. There is a wire going to this. However the wire is disconnected and the door is tie wrapped shut. is this critical? What does it do? Where does the wire connect to on the car I can't seem to find a matching connector. I don't know if I should mess with it.
Thanks

I'm assuming that is the ramair door that feeds the Crossfire injection. Correct?
Yea it's the hood air door, it should open on full throttle but people tend to rig it so it's open all the time. The system consists off the door, solenoid and control relay that's on the firewall next to the map sensor (next to the brake booster)
If it's not working after you connect the wire (which runs along the drivers side innner fender, there should be about 2 or 3 inches of wire on the solenoid and then a single black connector). I still have a good working solenoid, relay. door (foam is a little shabby) and bracket. If interested
Take it all off and wash the bottom area that is probably dirty. It will then allow cool ram air to reach the air cleaner the entire time you are moving and it will clean up the nasty bottom of your hood.

Shoot, this means my hood is not original, since my '76 has the flapper door with the wires leading to the front of the hood. Obviously they aren't hooked to anything. Too bad it wasn't vacuum operated like the cowl induction hoods on the SS Chevelles.
