Default 4.25" crank

427 Hotrod,

I love the idea of building a 489/496 with a stroker crank. That's my plan with my somewhat stock 454.

GKull---Yeah I know...that 'ole '27 was a heck of a heavy way to have fun! But that sucker ran like crazy and forever no matter what abuse I heaped on it. I'm talking serious abuse!!

Stroker stuff is getting awful cheap these days...hard to pass up the cubes. If you select the rest of the combo right, you'll be amazed at how quick a BIG motor can rev!

There's just lots of fun when you never worry about putting down your Super Big Gulp to downshift!!

I was just kidding. We were small block injected 8.90 class dragster racers. Always fixing blown stuff with a 9000 rpm injected motor. It ran 8.30's and you would slow it down to make the 8.90 s/c index Once we went to the injected 510 BBC we had to slow down for the 7.90 class and were always in the quick 16 bracket racing. Never had to work on it. It just ran fine and lasted a long time.

Go to a 7.90 or 8.90 national event and they are all 468 to 715 ci motor withs electronic T stops. Blowers that leave the line off idle and at the 330 foot mark come on and go through the lights at just under 200 mph

Yeah I know you were kidding George....

But I never got the whole throttle stop or "slow down" type racing. The only thing that ever gets me excited is heads up run what ya brung stuff.

I just can't se building a 7.50 car and then slowing it down to a 7.90. It would kill me!

what should I set the lash at to break the motor in, since it calls for a .026 hot lash?

.026 is lots of lash. Is it a new style cam? If your running a cam that requires a 20 minute break in period it's smart to only use one spring if it's a dual spring. I've always gone with the recommended lash settings from the first fire up till I retire the motor.

I have changed lash to as much as .006 tighter when I was running 225# closed springs just to keep from beating the needle bearing out of the rockers

I didn't think .026 was alot, I was looking at the chilton's manual for late 60's and early 70's, and it was anywhere from .024 to .030. I was just wondering if I should set it right at .026 for the break-in or if I should set a bigger or smaller gap. I do have a set of harland sharp roller rockers, and would like to keep from beating them up.

That's why i ask if it was an old style cam. Modern cams are made for less lash and have much steeper ramps. My new solid roller is .008 - .012 Most Crane cams that I have used are .018 - .022

What is your cam anyway?
