For those wondering about what it was causing my tranny whining noise, it turned out to be just a broken retaining snap ring inside. And after installing some new bearings and 4 bills later, tranny is being bolted on right now. Hardest thing about putting it back in is getting the shaft to insert into the pilot bushing. I can never get it to line up perfectly without the help of the attach bolts. Took me 3 hours to get out and now I've already got 3 putting it in and about another 2 to go. Hopefully everything will work right.

Minor overhaul should make trans good for many years now. And 4 bucks is 'bout what any shop charges to touch any thing just to stay in business. Hey, a rebuilt auto trans for any late model car is gonn'a be 2 grand.
After overhauling 2 Muncies myself only made me realize that's what transmission shops are for. Too many special tools, techniques and hard to find parts.
BTW i recall using longer bolts from H W store to draw trans into bell housing by tightening down a little on each corner at a time - then reinstalling original bolts. This is after using an alingment tool - or used trans input shaft to aling clutch disk.
Good luck. cardo0
My tranny had two whining noises, one all the time and one when I was in second & third. It also leaked. The rebuilder replaced two bearings, put in a new gasket set and cleaned it up. Now its working great. $250 CDN for the whole deal. I am lucky I found a real honest guy.
