I agree with the 'newbie' comments. I have been part of the forum for a while and now that I rebuilt my motor I understand a whole more and put myself on the medium knowledge.
However when it comes to the transmission back and suspension. I wouldn't even know where to look in the book I have. I have found if I toss a thread in the 'tech' section I get replies that are more infromative and quicker.
Example,, I just did a post today about my limited slip rear end, in a matter of 20 min I had 3 replies with good info and I have a place to start looking (is my posi just broke). When I put a post in general it can sit for days with only 1 reply and many times the post goes against what you learned and makes you wonder if you should listen or not.
Was this the right area to post? Don't know for sure, but I got something to look into before I make the wrong step forward.
I also find myself paying more attention to the 'tech' section as the information is much better to learn from as that seems to be where the 'experts' hang out.
I agree with there being two seporate sections and allow the Moderators to keep the consistancy. Those who need answers right away on the mechanics post in Tech. Show off of paint job in general.
IMHO, the following questions should be asked to qualify a post for teh Tech/Perf forum
1) Does it ask for or provide technical (i.e. electrical or mechanical), or performance data unique to a C3 Corvette or its modification?
2) Does it ask or provide an answer to a "How to" question related to a C3 Corvette technical repair or modification?
It is impossible to differentiate the difference between "easy, no brainer" technical content and "challenging, known only by the experienced".......so please lets not try
Just my 2 cents

Part of the problem is some people are going to post in the wrong section no matter what.
For my 0.02, I still think of things like vacuum as technical - it affects the way my car operates and the same goes for electrical - everything electrical should be technical unless it something like "Do these valve stem lites make my car look cool."
Fiberglass repair/mods (i.e. adding flares)
Welding/tools for special jobs
Electrical troubleshooting
Vacuum system problems
General running rough/poor performance

how about junior members not allowed to post in tech?
I am going to guess that most new people are coming to the CF with a question. I would guess that most of the time they are going to think it is a tech question. I don't think that not letting someone post in Tech section would just offend them. I don't believe you can not let them post in tech.
Well, the split has been behind us for a while now and it seems that George and I spend most of our forum time moving threads from Tech to General.

Bad enough to start a sticky seeking help. Remember these guys are volunteers, we don't want them drifting away too because they're sick of moving threads for an hour every day.
turtle, sounds good at first, but think about it, there are probably two ways people get involved in this forum. 1. People seeking a Corvette community to BS with, etc. and 2. People with an immediate problem that were sent here looking for help. Obviously the latter needs tech right away, I think I was one of those people... but it's been 3 years now, who knows. Too many will just stop in and disappear but it's not going to do us any good to get exclusive. I hate to say it but we might not always be so overpopulated.
Really I don't think we need to be too concerned with the gray areas. If it's borderline, don't move it. Unless we do a triple split we'll never have an Elite Tech Only section. The situation is already vastly improved from what it was before.
Fix that menu and leave a sticky titled "Stop! Should your post be in this section?" at the top. That would go a long way. (I like that sticky title, generic read-me stickies are as easy to skip as fine print legalese)
But what about other threads?
Fiberglass repair/mods (i.e. adding flares)
Welding/tools for special jobs
Electrical troubleshooting
Vacuum system problems
General running rough/poor performance
IMHO, all of these are tech. Pretty much anthing that discusses fixing/troubleshooting/modding something about the car should be tech.
I don't believe that anybody should be excluded from posting.
Lastly, y'all (Dave and George) are doing a superb job

Absolutely, what he said. And junior members(The label of which is a ridiculously unneeded descriptor bordering on someones need for power/superiority/vanity) could answer as well as ask good or bad questions as well as anybody. You know a junior member could own his own shop but just not have ALL the answers!
General is just that...General...What color would look best, which rims make my car look Phat, Who's going to Carlisle?
My .02 as well.
Should I install a Hurst Shifter? - General
How do I install this Hurst Shifter? - Tech
dd
By gosh I think you got it
accessory, add on, interior, General
Some of the most technically challenging jobs I have tackled have been in the interior under that dash. for example: the wire harness, mechanical and electronic tach and speedometer repair, GM radio repair...etc etc.
