Default rear end type (tech questionable)

First of all not sure if this should be in the tech section or not, so Moderators help me out.

Last week everyone helped me figure out that my clutches in the rear were worn out. So after calling about 10 different places and finding only 2 that were formiliar I now have another question for the forum

One guy asked me if I had the Trac Lock or Power Lock set up?

I didn't notice anything in the book that said either of these. I have a 69 vert, 4 speed(norm), 350-350 (now 383). Was there only one system this year or how can I tell what system should be in there. To my knowledge no rear work has been done. 75k miles on it.

You have a Eaton Limited Slip (GM-speak for Positraciton). The people you are dealing with are imbiciles. Traction Loc is a Ford limited slip.

Do yourself a favor and go to Tom's Differentials or Van Steel since they are 'Vette specialists.

I have to agree with you Gerry

69 - what makes you think the clutches are gone? If no one has been in there you have the solid steel clutches which are the best ones for a Eaton to use. The spider gears are 10-18's which I would replace with 10-17's for added strength. To use a well worn out expression, Corvette rear ends aren't exactly rocket science. They do require ability to work within a few thousands of an inch but any good driveline shop "Should" be able to handle it. There are some mods that can be done to them that a shop may or may not know of. Of course they're going to charge a lot more to do them too.
If you're capabable of removing the rear end, I can wlk you through a good inspection of it. Also do a search, my paper should still be here on rebuilding them.

Good luck,
Gary

gtr1999, I put out a thread a week or two ago inquiring about getting better traction with a limited slip. You were even referenced in the reply's as an inquiry if you still rebuilt rear ends.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...229&forum_id=3
Or under tech it was titled as 'traction from Limited Streat/road course'

I did just go out and put up only the driver side and I can pretty easaly rotate the drivers side tire around.

From the manual it shows only the 'positronic' option for the rear end with a L-46 motor and 3.36 rear gears with the 4 spead.

I also was informed by another car friend that the vettes came with a Dana rear end. Now I am getting confused

I am also disappointed with the local area shops, as none of them seem to know about this rear end and are having issues finding the clutch kits or rebuild kits.

gtr1999, I will look for your article and read it over tonight.
Thanks. I look forward to learning more on this.

gtr1999 is the man for this. If I were in your shoes I would just fast ship it to Gary and ask him go through it for you. That way it will be done once and correctly. Norval and I redid my diff with Gary's remote help last winter. We used his approaches to dial it in along with the elimation of the clutch springs and crush sleeve. Works better than ever...it is so quiet and locks up both wheels real good.

Thanks for the support Doug

Neil, send me your email address and I'll send you my paper. I don't know why it can't be found here anymore? The '63 and '64 vettes used a Dana that wasn't too good. The '65-'79 vettes used the Eaton which is better. As Doug said, there are ways to prep it that most shops won't do because of the added time and cost. It all comes down to how much you want to spend to get the best job.I'll be gald to help you out with your questions.

Vettes did come w/Dana rears. In 80-82 & 84-96.

Gary's paper very good. Very detailed.

VanSteel,

Since you are online thought I could save myself some internet searching.
What is your pricing for us on a clutch kit and rebuild kit?
