Default Air Cond Trouble??

On my 81, everything in the system is new, I replaced the filter/orfice and recharged with R134. I have checked the heater core shutoff is working, and I have verifed the temp damper is in the A/C position. The A/C blows cool air, but not as cold as it should. The dryer is dripping water like it is cooling to beat the band! The compressor, like on my 77 trans am with R-134 is cycleing more that it seems like it should.. Any suggestions???

It's low on refrigerant--how much did you put in? What are your pressures?

Need a little more info. Did you evacuate the system to 28Hg for 30 minutes and verify that it held vacuum for 12 hrs before recharging? What oil did you use and how much? How much 134a did you charge in and what pressures are you reading at what ambient temp when the compressor cycles?

Yes, when non-condensibles remain in a system, the superheat rises and turns the evap coil into a wonderful dehumidifier--good call!

I will get the readings, and I didn't evacute the system. My vacuum pump died last year. I put 2.5 cans in the system with the R-134 oil. Thanks for the pointers. I will post the reading tommorrow. Any more advice??? How much gas (r-134) should it hold? Am have no experience since R-12. Seems like R-12 would take about 3-3.5 cans. Thanks a million!

The system holds 48oz of R12--so you should add about 39oz of R-134a.

You can get away with not drawing a vacuum on the system if it's open to the air for a very brief time, but in your case, you really need to do it.

To get it working like new, flush and vacuum system. Then purge with R-134a if you don't have nitrogen.

I use R409a--it works better than R134a (and better than R12) and I bought a 30lb cylinder for $232--30lbs of R134a is close to $350 now.

There you go. Your trying to compress air and water. It's essential to pull vacuum for a good long time in order to boil out the water vapor that an open system collects in very short order.
