Default How Does the Column come apart?

I bought new bearings for my 79 steering column but can't seem to figure out how get it apart at the pivet point of the tilt. I found 2 screws that really loosens everything but still doesn't come apart. Helllppp!!!!

The following paper and the three pages that follow should help.

sounds like you need to take the two pivot plugs out of the side of the tilt portion

I just found a trick that might be useful when you reassemble your column. Getting the C-clamp in place that holds the locking plate can be a real bear. I pushed the plate in as far as it needed to go, then inserted the ends of two paint can openers into the slot at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions. These held the plate in place, which allowed me to maneuver the C-clamp in without having to maintain tension on the spring. These are the tools they give you at a paint store that look like screwdrivers, but with a 90 degree bend at the end. Jim Shea also mentioned a bridge tool, but since I didn't have one of these handy, I had to improvise.

Gator - did you use a steering wheel puller (I think that's what it's calleD)? I've read that this tool is also required.

Thanks,
JCJ

Yes, I did use a steering wheel puller. A friend suggested that I could just yank on the wheel hard enough and it would come off, but I did't feel comfortable putting that much stress on the column, so I bought a puller (around $20 at Sears).
