Hello Fellow Vetteheads,
Today I installed a window relay switch which replaced the old one that was shot . Here is the problem, the new one either was bad before I put it in , or, something else is going on that popped the new one?? Should have checked the new one before I put it in but did not . The windows are down most of the summer , however in the evenings it will start to get a bit cooler here shortly and as of now I am putting a jumper across the wires to get the windows up or down and then take the jumper off. This is a real pita but is effective. Could I get some HELP here to figure out what is going on.
Electrical relays and fuses don't usually pop. If I think I am hearing what you are saying the new relay is now bad too. This would lead me to suspect a short somewhere in that part of the sytem.
Hello Kona,
I thought of that but when I jumpered out the relay the windows work fine if I had a short would not the 30amp fuse kick out and windows not work?
I had basically the same problem with some ebay switches. I was lucky that I bought two at the same time since one turned out to be bad from the get go.
If you can jump it it's got to be the switch! That all that the switch does is jump it. Why not take the old one apart and clean the contacts? If nothing inside is broken a good cleaning should do the trick.
HELLO HOW DO YOU TAKE THE RELAY APART IT IS A SEALED UNIT?
HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING.
PETER
You should be able to (carefully) pry the centerpiece out with a small screwdriver, unless for some reason yours are different from the average switch.
What I am jumping is the connection where the relay goes, Iam taking the relay out and putting a jumper in and the windows work fine, I do not believe from that it is the the window switches. But cannot explain why when I put the new relay in that the windows will not work
Try a different manufacturer for a relay, when I replaced my fan relay the first one didn't work (xyz brand), it would blow fuses at high fan speed, I went and purchased the Delco brand and it worked perfectly.
Bond007, I am in the same boat as you. Both windows don't work, so I took your advice, pulled the relay out, and put a jumper between the red/white and black/orange to at least get the windows back up. If you get a new relay and it works, please let us know.
Also, I am looking to buy a relay but can't find them locally. Zip has one but I am not sure if its a delco. Any suggestions from the team as to where to get a delco would be appreciated.
