I have got all 4 bolts out and the steering box loosened so that 1 piece of the joint is left on the box and the other piece of the joint on the steering shaft.
How does these joint pieces come off now, whacks with a hammer?
they do look a little rusty underneath...
Use a pry bar or big flathead in the slots of each piece and twist, to open the gap. I would start with some WD or PB first though, and let it soak a couple minutes...
If you're planning on replacing just the joint with one fo those $10 kits, do yourself a favor and buy the GM joint.They cost more but are a much better quality then the crap sold as rebuild kit.
You will note that my paper also recommends that you replace your flex coupling with the GM service part. It is still available through GM dealers and many Corvette suppliers.

The GM part is the whole shebang. Both ends that you are having trouble removing plus the rag joint. I agree with Gary, go ahead and get the GM part. I had the kit from Advance or wherever I got it. It wound up staying on the shelf after seeing the GM part.
The GM service part number for the late 1969 through 1982 C3 flex coupling is 7818568. It is the part that directly attaches to the steering gear input shaft. It will include the two shoulder bolts that stick out to the rear and attach to the flange on the steering column. The flange on the steering column will not be included with the flex coupling.
I think that the flex coupling back in 1963 - 1966 had the column flange permanently attached.

instead of using pry bars and what not, thread a bolt in on the threaded side of the bolt hole and keep turning it, put a metal strip or solid washer (no hole) on the other side so the bolt when tightened presses against the washer, that way you can easily put a constant pressure on it giving you the opportunity to whack the thing off w/ a hammer.
