Default temperature sending switch

My temp gauge in the console isn't working on my 76. I was told that I needed a new temperature sending switch to fix the problem. The guy that's been working on my car did not put it in. He says he forgot and his shop is quite a distance from me and assured me that I could do it. Does anybody know where it's located? I have a new switch but I can't seem to find it. It could already be removed but need help replacing it. Thanks in advance.

You are talking about the temp sender right?

Should be located in the driver's side cylinder head around plug #3.

Don't forget to drain the rad before pulling the sensor out.

you don't have to drain the rad if you preseal the sending unit and work fast...

Looking at Boofers pic and an oem pic from Paragon, I'm sure the one I have is incorrect. The black end is much longer and bigger. The radiator will start draining if I don't preseal and I'm not fast enough? I am no mechanic by any shape or form. Should I have someone with a quicker brain then mine do the job, provided I find the right switch?

Do this simple test before changing out your sending unit and will eliminate the possibility that your gauge is bad:
1) Have an assistant sit in the driver seat and turn the key on but do not start the engine
2) Disconnect the wire from the temp sending unit and intentionally ground the wire to the frame or any other good ground source.
3) Ask your assistant if the temp guage moves. It should move and peg out to the max. Since the temp sending unit makes more ground the hotter the engine, if the temp guage does not move and max out when grounding the wire then the guage is bad or you've got a bad wire between the sending unit and the guage.

To check the wire you'll need to do a continuity test from the end of the wire at the sending unit against the other end of the wire at the temp guage. This is a simple test but does require a meter and the ability to get at the end of the wire at the guage. Good luck &

Default Make sure that you have the RIGHT part!

I have been fighting the heat with my almost stock BB vette in Texas! I replaced the water pump, sending unit and t-stat. Still the temps were unchanged or even worse! I then bought a DeWitts radiator and more. Only to find that my car was not hot by shooting it with one of those laser thermometers, I think they might be call a pyrometer? The sending unit and or gage seem to be off or not matched. Anyone have any feed back on this.

As a matter of note with the new radiator and seals it now runs a cool 185 even in Houston Texas! Just need to get the reading on my gage right. The local corvette shop has a new "matched" unit on order!
