awsome! so GM has a T56 and instalation kit that allows you to put a T56 in a C3 or is it just the trans and you have to fabricate the crossmember still? i was thinking about how hard it would be to put a LT1/T56 combo out of an fbody into a C3 today. Ill continue to search, but would those that have done this think its easier and better to do the engine and then get this other trans instead of using the fbody trans? is it worth the cost difference considering a salvaged Lt1/T56 combo can be bought for 1200 easily? thanks.
Not a GM kit! But using a Bowtie crossmember with a minor mod to the gearbox mount works. You might want to look at some of the parts that Classic Chevy 5 Speed have.
With 6th gear being .50, you can run some serious cogs in your differential. 6th in my Impala SS is almost useless until about 70 mph - and the car has 3.73's in it with 25" tall tires. Most Impalas that due the T56 swap run at least a 4.10 or a 4.56! The 93 T56 has different ratios than the 94-97 so be careful which trans you get.
so by Bowtie do you mean Bowtie Overdrives the transmission shop in California? sorry I am just not getting what you all mean by bowtie I geuss.
I would run at least a 3.90 if I was to do the swap. I have 3.42s from the factory in my formula and they are great for highway crusing, but 4.10s would be fine as well.
It is not GM who has the installation kit, but Tremec. They do have a daptor plate that bolts right between the T56 and GM bellhousing.
This adaptor plate also slightly turns the T56 clockwise ( looking from back forward ) in order to clear the tunnel at the shifter area.
If you use the original Vette removable crossmember ( like I did ), it has to be mounted about 2.5 inches further back as this tranny is very long.
