Default voltage at terminals

on my super coil, i have 3.5 volts when the car is running, this is at the terminals on the coil.. should it be more

The ignition side should be approx. 12 volts, a little less if yiu are still using a resistance wire or ceramic resistor. The distributor side is pulsating d.c., can't really spec. this (don't need to measure).

Typically a resistor or resistance wire is put in line in before the coil to reduce the voltage to the coil. The purpose is to protect your points from arcing and prolong the life of you condenser. If your engine runs good and doesn't cut out under load, it's ok.

More primary voltage equals more secondary voltage equals hotter spark.
