hey guys, i'm rebuilding my 79 vette, but i got a 77 parts car, all was dandy until i took the motor out of the car... the distributor was there with all the wires, but the wires were not connected to the sparkplugs, does anyone know which wire goes where?
Could it be because I have tach drive distributor?

As long as the order around the distributor is the same, the starting position of cylinder 1 doesn't really matter. It just means that your wires probably cross around or above the distributor making it a little less tidy...

The HEI dist were put in and the wires are different than the pre HEI cars. Mine is also different than this. Like was said before it really does not matter where #1 is as long as the rotor is positioned right.
It all depends on how you drop your distributor in.
I followed the procedure in Petersen Publications "How to Rebuild Your Smallblock Chevy"
The key thing is to observe the firing order.

, you can make #1 anywhere, if you want to line it up "right", you can unclamp the dist, and start to pull it out till you can feel the gearing clear the camshaft, then you can feel it and rotate it a "tooth" at a time to put the rotor to point to wherever you want.
stock, a HEI should have #1 point towards #1 cylinder, a points distributer I've heard typically will point to #2 - but that is just as good as where the source I got it from - which I don't remember
