Now that I've somewhat solved the "fan striking the shroud bolts" problem, I can't get the stupid car into reverse. I got under it and the reverse lockout cable has come off the ear on the reverse shift linkage makng it impossible to get the reverse gate open. The cable is also bent at about a 20* angle and doesn't seem to want to be pulled, via use of a very long nosed pair of pliars, back toward the ear so that it can be reconnected. The ear moved forward about an inch with some encouragement from the same set of pliars but is still an inch and a half away from the cable end. I'm told that these cables, once bent, cannot be reused or repaired and that they are no longer in production. That, of course, from a Corvette parts dealer who "may have one in the back room". My car is a 69 427/390 4 speed and has been balky about going into reverse since I bought the car a couple of months ago. What is the truth about the lockout mechanism on these cars?

They are a pain to work on. They Just allow you to remove the key out of the ignition. You cannot turn the key all the way off unless it is in reverse. I took my cable off long ago. I now have a Tremec so the cable would not even work. Just make sure the other end on the steering column is in the up position and everything will work fine.

So let me understand. I assumed that the ear on the reverse linkage on the transmission was what effected the reverse lockout and that it had to move forward by virtue of the cable or be tied forward if I were to ever hope to get the car into reverse again. Are you guys saying that the steering column end of the cable is the critical point? That just blows me away. How does the steering column prevent you from getting the transmission into reverse? Please explain. TIA.

The cable is for the key removal that's what they were talking about above. The cable doesn't keep the trans from going into reverse. If there is a problem with this part of the linkage I would look closely and make sure none of the other arms or levers are bent. I suspect this is where you will find your problem. Also you can try going from first or second gear then to reverse. You probably know to do this already but I know how it is to be frustrated.
