Default Unwelding Mufflers

I need to replace a muffler. (have a replacement). The pipes in great shape and I want to reuse it until I replace the whole system. The muffler is welded to the pipe. Any suggestions on accomplishing this?

Using a high speed cutoff wheel on a high speed air grinder you can do a neat surgical job of removing the weld and cleanly separating the muffler.

I like the chain cutters myself for that kind of job. They will make a perfect cut. The only problem is that they are slow and annoying to use compared to a cutoff wheel. I wouldn't get near it with a Sawsall unless you want to make a mess out of it, but maybe that's just me. I can't cut anything near a straight line with one.

I thought about a plumber pipe type cutter. I don't care about cutting the old muffler inlet pipe, but I have to preserve the long pipe that slips into the muffler inlet pipe about 2 inches or so. If the cut wheel doesn't do it, I'll try the pipe cutter
