Could be just an empty ball joint .... no grease. I have one that has a bad habit of loosing its grease quicker than the other three, even though all the boots look to be in good shape. It probably isn't making a good seal. I can always tell when its getting low, makes a definite "thunk" sound when I brake ..... spindle moving back and forward in the pocket.
When I Apply The Brakes, I Hear A Clunking Noise In The Drivers Side Front End. It Feels Like Something Is Slipping/moving. Any Ideas? 80 L48
Don't forget to check the caliper mounting bolts. I would consider it very rare, but I've seen a bolt get loose and fall completely out. The guy was able to drive the car 20 miles home before he could diagnose the problem.
