My 73 L82 auto I purchased about 6 months ago. Ever since then it was hard starting even without cold weather. This happens just the first time I start that day. At first when turning it over it doesn't start. Then on the second try it will start while pumping the gas, but then dies after increasing to around 2000 rpm first and staying there for a couple of seconds. If I give it gas to stay alive it will. After that, it starts with a little gas. It seems to high idle for too long as well. I stays around 2200 rpm then after around 5 minutes of driving it comes down to around 1200 rpm. In another 5 minutes or so, 600 rpm, much better. Sometimes it will also idle around 2200 rpm while in park, but then come down to a much more respectable level when in gear. This gives the car a nice jerk while getting into gear.
Do you think I should rebuild my carb or just buy a new one if this is the answer?

If you drop me an e-mail request for it, I can send you my choke setup paper for the Q-Jet. You can't buy new Q-Jets anymore, so rebuilding it is your option if the adjustment does not solve the problem. V8FastCars@msn.com
Thanks. I didn't know it could be adjusted for high idle. I adjusted the choke when it was thoroughly warmed up. That didn't do much for the high idle being so high at the time.
