Could anyone help me decode the stamped number on the block of my 79 corvette. The number is M01090VP. I could not find any relationship with any of these numbers and the VIN number for my car. So does this mean that this is a replacement engine? Thanks a lot Gary B.
I'd say you have a non-Corvette replacement engine. The M is the plant code but my sources do not list an M for Chevrolet engines. 0109 should stand for the date it was assembled at the engine plant. OVP would be the code to designate application, horsepower, and type of transmission the engine was built for. OVP is not listed in my Chevrolet engine guide.
There should be a second number stamped on the engine pad, part of which would include the consecutive unit number of the vehicle it went in to.
If this is not a rebuilders stamp and is a genuine engine plant stamp 'M' is the code for the Mexican built motors. I can find no suffix code for either VP or OVP.
I just checked again and the only number stamped on the block is M01090VP and no other numbers. There is a casting number on the block on the drivers side, below where the cruise control is located. It has some letters that can't read and MEXICO and directly below are 10066036 or 100S6036. Thanks Gary B.
you'd probably have done better starting a new a new post, in the c1/c2 section of the forum, but i'll see if i can help.
The first set of digits is the engine assembly code. I suspect the code is actually t1124il, not 11124il.
"t" indicates the tonawanda engine plant, where all corvette big blocks were cast and assembled.
"11" is november.
"24" is the 24th day.
"il" is a 66 corvette 427/425 engine.
The second set of digits, 6108591, is the engine vin derivative.
"6" indicates 1966.
"108591" is the vin number and should match the last 6 digits of your car's vin.
1966 corvette vin 8591 was built on december 15, 1965, and is powered by a 427/425 assembled on november 11, 1965.
thank u very much, when i bought the car he told me it was a non matching engine. He said it was a 427-390, i was trying to find out what car the enging came from, really it makes no diff. ,thank u again u helped me very much
So this would be a 305. Its a motor I purchased from a guy. The story is that a fella had a 1980 C3 and had a bunch of extra parts both OEM and mod parts. The guy did a lot of mods to his car. He sold the house he was living in and left a bunch of stuff there when he left. The new owner put a set of gauges up for sale..everything except the speedo. I bought those from him not knowing what else he had. After i had my son in law pick up the gauges he told me thay guy has a bunch of stuff if your interested. Anyway i said sure and bought the guy out not really knowing what all he had. This engine was part of the pile. The guy even left the hòod of the car there after he put a cowl hood on it. I am going to look at the hood today and see if there is an indication it came off the car with this motor. I dont know if he bought this motor or took it out of his car when he was doing the mod project. Thank you for your time and info!! Thinking if I cant find the car it came from I will probably put it up for sale. My 1980 has had a motor swap and didnt come with this motor and mine is an automatic. The hood on mine is in good shape so i will probably put that up for sale. The motor still has the smog pump and air cleaner on it. Gotta see if the cylinders and valves hold pressure and turns ok but the oil in it looks very clean. Any ideas on motor and hood values? I know its hard since the condition of the motor is still unlnown.. i just dont think I will be using either..

Now I have to decide condition. Probably going to have to get around and go play with my gauges and compressor to see if there is any apparent problems. Since the guy also had a new performance cam and lifters im thinking he was going to use the moror but didnt. Since its a 350 it might be worth building. Hmmm decissions, decissions.Thank you!!
