I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it for me to rebuild or send them out for rebuilding.
What's the total cost of parts, bearings, seals, shim kit, bushings, etc for a rebuild?
What's the cost of special tools? ie, $99 for setup tool, bearing separator, etc. if I've already got a press, dial indicator, micrometer.

Have not taken mine apart yet. Just making a list with expected costs.
Parts:
Inner/outer bearing
Inner outer seals
bearing spacer shim kit
Trailing arm bushing/sleeve
Backing plate (seems like everyone replaces these)
Parking brake shoes
Turn brake rotor
Tools:
Bearing setup tool
Bearing separator
I hope to begin work over Thanksgiving weekend on mine. Unfortunately, it's been over 25 years since I've had one of these apart, so I can't see the problem in your picture. I assume that you washed the grease out of the bearing and that it didn't come apart that way.....
Sorry Zwede, I'm just checking to see if TT is aware tonight
Bearing seal is backwards, spindle is beat on, journal damaged, new bearing useless, charges to the owner by this Bozo should be criminal!!!
BTW- the original shims used with the new bearing for both spindles were .012-.016" too big, that's why Bubba couldn't just replace the bearings- you have to check each bearing setup.
Ok I've had enough of this fun for today, I'm going home!!
Gary , One last problem Could you give me the part number of the back seal . I tried using Federal Mogul part#9178s The rubber seal part is flat across.I can't slide on the back splined yoke without smashing the rubber seal.
Gary... you do great work as usual and also not afraid to share your techniques with us. Thanks! I don't like the rough feel of one of my TA bearings that was done by someone else two years ago. I will be using this thead to guide me through it.
Gary, I used Timkem 5113 on my outers. The rubber was straight. I had to use the Federal Mogul 9178S on the inner.....they were also straight.
Burnt71....when the yoke is installed it "flares" the rubber inward creating the lip. It has a pretty fair amount of "grip" so be sure and put some grease on the rubber.

Gary, great job and you make it look so simple.....I have one question though, i think i understand the concept of this (ok maybe not) any way heres the ? with the set up tool, since it lets you set up everything on a shaft that is slightly smaller so you can get the parts on and off, and find the correct shims, and measure everything....but how do you know that everything you mesured for on the setup shaft is going to be correct for the real axle shaft? thanks bob

Bob....until Gary checks in.......think of it as establishing a length/distance. The length includes the 2 bearings, spacer, and shim. This length will always repeat itself whether on the setup tool or spindle. The only thing that will change the total length is the thickness of the shim. When you take your endplay check you're essentially measuring the length of your bearings, spacer, and shim (call it spindle setup) against the length of the outer races in the bearing housing. You're wanting the "length" of the spindle setup to be .001 to .002 longer than the housing. You achieve the .001 to .002 endplay via shim thickness. I hope this makes sense.....kinda hard to explain. Gary may be able to do a better job.
