Default installing TH 350

Has anyone ever installed a TH350 in place of a TH400 in early model C3?

The reason I am asking is I recently came across a great deal on a TH350.

Thanks

Is there any other reason you want the TH350 besides it's cheap? The reason I ask is that they are not the same overall size. The TH350 is shorter...thus requiring driveshaft change, as well as possible mount change? I know the transmission is shorter than the TH400, but I'm not sure if the tranny mount would work.

Good luck,
Jeff

I don't think the mounts are in the same place, nor do they use the same length driveshaft (or yoke). Why the change?

SOME TH350's will be direct replacement. two rear shaft sizes. I don't remember which is longer (400 or 350) but one of the rear-shaft lengths makes them compatable.

Thanks for the replys,

the reason is I have a low time TH350 I got a good deal on from another vette owner and I did not realize that the unit in my vette was a TH400. I figured it would be a good time to install as I am also installing a 355.

Not so fast there....

There is a difference in the location of the transmission mount on the 350 and 400 Turbo.

Granted the short tailshaft 400 is "pretty close" to the length of the short tailshaft 350 there is still a LARGE difference in the location of the rear mount.

There are correct mounts and driveshafts available. 76 I think used both TH350 or TH400 with the same crossmember just different mounts off the crossmember. Be advised that you will also need a kickdown cable and appropriate carb bracket, TH400 had an electric kickdown. If it was me, I'd sell the "new" TH350 and get an overdrive trans while you are converting.
