Just had the heads off for valve job. After reassembling engine the transmission will not shift out of first gear and actually sounds like it is slipping in first. All was okay before valve job. Any thoughts as to why it isn't shifting now?

Did you check the vacuum line from the intake to the trans modulator, this may have came off. I remember replacing the intake on my trans am awhile back, After I got it back together, took it for a test drive and same thing, would not shift from first. During dis-assembly the vacuum line came off the trans modulator, I attached it back and shifted fine.
There's also a shift rod connected to the throttle linkage that connects to the transmission that might have been overlooked...I think they call it a TV..check that too..
I agree with vacuum line being the problem. It will seem as though it's slipping when they don't shift. Vacuum should have been connected to tee fitting on intake behind carb. Should be idleing rough if a vacuum leak exists.
Thanks for the help. I knew the vacuum line at the intake was connected. How the line got disconnected at the module is anybodys guess. Reconnected with new tubing and shifting great! Will the tranny go another 183000 miles before rebuild?

Sure it can, just keep fluid in it (cause it likely leaks all the time) and keep changing filters. The TH350C that was in my 68 chevy truck(came from an el camino) had so many miles on it I lost track. A couple of times Id need to put that auto tranny de-glazing stuff in, but then she'd run great for another couple of years. and no, I did not drive it like my grandma....
